Election Day Distraction (Recruit Update)

I'm sure most of you guys are sick of seeing election commercials in the middle of our football games every week. So today, I decided we'd interrupt the 10 minute long Obama ads and the McCain negative campaigning to bring you a little Canes talk.

The big news in Cane land today is Rueben Randle's top 5.

Randle of course is a 5 Star WR from Bastrop, Louisiana. He is rated as the number 2 overall prospect in the nation by Rivals.com and the number 11 overall prospect in the nation by ESPN. He is being heavily recruited by the Canes, who are rumored to only be looking to land 1 WR in the 2009 recruiting class.

The newest news on Randle has him listing his top 5 schools: "I have just been sitting around watching games and seeing what the teams are doing on offense. I am just looking for the best opportunity to come in and play, and help the team win a national championship." said Randle.

He goes on to name LSU, Bama, USC, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State as his top 5.

So what's the story here? Many knowledgable Canes are in a state of confusion over this. As recently as July, Randle had said Miami would likely make his top list of schools and as recently as August he had promised to visit Michigan. Now suddenly those schools are out, being replaced by Oklahoma and Oklahoma state.

The new report on Randle also has him announcing on National Signing Day instead of the Army All American Game like he previously said he would announce at.

My take on this: As in the Brandon McGee case, when something sounds funny, it usually is funny. The report was by an ESPN site (wrong more often then not) and completely contradicts that general idea that it was a three way battle between LSU, Bama and Miami. Add in the fact that his annouce date also contradicts previous statements and I'm having trouble buying this one. Hard to have the number 2 rated player in the nation make big changes to his top schools and it go completely unnoticed until now.

No need to freak out just yet Cane fans. This one is far from over. He will be a tough pull from LSU and chances are small that he actually ends up here but getting him down here after the season to sit with the coaches and finishing with a big bowl win will go a long ways to getting us in real good with this kid. We are without a doubt a darkhorse on the outside looking in but we are not out of the picture just yet. Just sit back and enjoy the show. He's a fun one to watch.
